Herman Cain "Suspends" From the Candidational Bid
Herman Cain drops out of the presidential bid a few weeks before the nomination begins after facing several allegations towards being improper towards women. Always producing innovative ideas such as 9-9-9, Cain has been a liked candidate and remained high in the polls since his begin in May.
A rally that was supposed to launch Herman Cain’s campaign turned into a news conference in Atlanta on Saturday, December 3rd, as he stated, "I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction.” Cain voices to his 400 supporters that appeared that day that his suspension in the race is due to the fact that the allegations have been hurtful to his family. “My wife, my family, and I – we know that those false and unproved allegations are not true!” he shouts as his wife Gloria sits and nods in agreement behind him.
Allegations that cause Cain’s dropout included Ginger White, a businesswoman in Atlanta who discussed how they have had ongoing affairs for over 13 years. Women leaking stories about being sexually harassed by Cain while working with the National Restaurant Association haunted the candidate throughout the past month.
Polls that originally had 23% of Republicans in favor of Cain dropped down to a whopping 8% in some areas of America. The former CEO was left with little choice as the media continue to display the situations. In regards to his choice to leave the race, Cain quotes "I am disappointed that it came to this point, that we had to make this decision."
Cain’s dropout now leaves seven candidates left: Bauchmann, Paul, Santorum, Gingrich, Perry, Romney, and Huntsman. Favorites Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney will be able to increase their voices and rise in the campaign. Other candidates will benefit with more spotlight as well.
Cain wishes to continue being a voice. Those who still support Cain can support him through his upcoming website thecainsolution.com.

Colleges with the Highest Retention Rates!
Pictured: Yale University
When high school juniors and seniors begin to search for the college they envision attending in the next year or so, they are subjected into choosing their final decisions based on the following details:
- Location- City or Suburban
- Size- Heavy populated university, small college, or in between
- Major- Strength of program at that college
- Cost- How much they are being offered
- Parent influence- where parents want their children to attend
One factor that parents, guidance counselors, and universities tend to leave out when assisting the young adults search for their “dream college” is retention rates. Retention rates reveal the percentage of students that remain at the university after their freshman experience. During college visits, on websites, and on handouts/brochures, top-notch factors about the university will be revealed: exciting extracurricular activities, opportunities on campus, athletic statistics, and notable alumni. Students need to be aware that several universities sugarcoat these school aspects to make them believe that the school will provide for them what they need to succeed in life for the price that the institution charges. Students who fall for this trap end up entering, catch onto this hoax by two semesters and continue their studies elsewhere. In fact, the current percentage of students who do not continue at the college they started at as a freshman is over 1/3 that enter!
Do not fear! There are quite a few schools in America that once you enter you will never want to leave. Students have found overall satisfaction with the following university from location, teachers/department, and campus life for the price!
Top 5 Colleges with the Highest Retention Rates:
Ranked by US News College Rankings
1. Columbia University - 99%
2. Yale University- 99%
3. Brown University- 98%
4. California Institute of Technology- 98%
5. Dartmouth College- 98%
6. Massachusetts Institute of Technology- 98%
7. Princeton University- 98%
8. Stanford University- 98%
9. University of Chicago- 98%
10. University of Notre Dame- 98%
The question rises as to who is to receive credit for these colleges to remain so luring to students? Is it the board of trustee’s that accurately run the university? Can it be the professors that inspire the young adults to stay around? Or how about give some credentials for the strength of the students? Nirali Sampat, a sophomore Biochemical Engineering major explains that “the retention rate is more a function of the type of student that goes here rather than being related to a specific quality about the university.” This would infer that every student at any college enrolls fully intending to complete their degree, but students whom are at these top retention rate universities seem better able to embrace challenges that arise with a college education and overcome them instead of shying away from difficulties and dropping out.
Sampat also shared why a prospective student may want to attend her university. “Columbia is a fantastic place to go to college because of the huge number of professional opportunities offered in NYC before and after graduation, and because of the exceedingly large number of research opportunities available to undergrads” Junior Rachel Boggs, a Political Science Major at the University of Notre Dame also provides insight about her school. “One thing I love about my school is that every time I walk onto campus, I feel a sense of community. Notre Dame is such a close-knit family that several students remain on campus all four years! There is no place like Notre Dame- it’s the perfect university to be at.”
Things are starting to change amongst other schools that may have low retention rates- such as actually putting the percentage out there. In Veronica McKinney’s book “Staying of Leaving the Course- Non Completion and Retention of mature students in further and higher education” she comments that “institutions are now more acquired to monitor retention rates and collect more student data more carefully and more detailed in the past” This is an important factor because if student know ahead of the time what the percentage is (good or bad) they still may attend regardless.
A piece of advice is to ask around! You want to feel comfortable, be educated, and have an overall good college experience without having to transfer. Most schools now have class pages on social mediums like Facebook and Twitter where students can leave comments. When students transfer they fear losing credits, having to make new friends, and comparing their former environment. Instead of having to be stressed- prepare in advance. Do intensive research when searching for your college of interest to make your first choice your good choice!

Penn State Scandal
Students at the Pennsylvania State University are concerned that the public holds false conceptions about the university at large as the scandal continues to be a rising topic amongst thousands of other campuses, social websites, and news mediums. Opinions on why the bashing needs to cease all ties into one thought: the football team is NOT Penn State.
Overtly, American’s can be honest- when “Penn State” is brought up the term “football” is usually conjoined. The Division 1 Football Team is reputable for its top rankings in the nation. Thousands of people drive through State College on weekends, painted in dark royal blue and white anticipating wins for their favorite college team. In the past month however, when “Penn State” is brought up “Joe Po” or “scandal” is affiliated. The long-going battle for justice that Penn State dealt with lost them a university president and loved coach.
While both of these focuses are morally correct in the eyes of the public, those who attend still glance at their school in a different light. What about the term “academia?” Or the fact that Penn State is 45th best university in the nation (according to U.S News’ “Best Universities in 2010” List.) While Penn State is seen with a few corrupted faculty members third, and as owner of a prestigious college football team second, attendee’s will agree that Penn State is an excellent university first.
PSU Sophomore Elizabeth Rutere found one good in the recent exploit that Penn State has been enduring. “The scandal gives Penn State the opportunity to educate people who do not know about the positive credentials of the university.”
Large concerns from the public are whether the scandal will affect recruitment for football, other athletic teams, and overall admissions into the university. Rutere recalls on universities such as Virginia Tech and University of Indiana (institutions that were able to overcome the excessive media when issues rose on their campuses) and adds, “In time, this shall pass too.” Hopes for Penn State to become even better of a school after the scandal is a shared goal amongst the university.
Of course, students, team players, and faculty alike will miss their coach of 50 years Joe Paterno. There was no questioning his love for Penn State athletics. Before being relieved from his job, he announces, “[This] is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.”

2012: Transforming the World Posted on October 1, 2011 - Provided by Mary Devlin 2012 is believed by many to be the year marking the shift of the Ages - specifically, leaving the Age of Pisces behind and touching off the Age of Aquarius. As the song goes, some believe there will be "sympathy and understanding, brotherhood and peace abounding." Others believe that 2012 will bring natural disasters and chaos of all types, marking the end of the world as we know it. So, should you worry? No. Chances are that neither of these extremes will occur. However, 2012 will bring major changes in human consciousness. On January 1, Venus, planet of love, and Neptune, planet of humanity, will be passing through Aquarius - and this could bring a new cycle full of hope, peace, and visions for the future. Natives of each of the Four Elements - Fire, Earth, Air, and Water - will have a different experience as the year unfolds and planets transit. |
|
Natives of Fire Signs - Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius - will be the movers and shakers. Aries will be the leaders and innovators. If changes need to be made in any department of life, Rams will be leading the charge, organizing various groups to keep fresh ideas coming. Leos are the ones who will actually give form to these ideas, through the arts and new inventions. Sagittarians are the visionaries, those who work hard to turn ideals into reality and make sure that the results are useful and positive. |
